Go Dog Go!
by PD Eastman

Go Dog Go! is one of the most popular children's books of our time, with over 3.5 million copies sold since its first publication in 1961.

What makes this book such a perennial favorite with kids and their parents? For starters, it's fun, it's educational, and it's about stuff that's close to the hearts of children and adults alike - such as dogs, romance and parties. Sounds intriguing? You mean, you get all this in a little kid's book? Yes, all this and more.

This is a great first reader for young children as the book uses only the simplest single-syllable words and sentences. For example, the text for the first four pages reads: Page 1: "Dog." Page 2: "Big dog." Page 3: "Little dog." Page 4: "Big dogs and little dogs." This repetition helps to build confidence in beginner readers. Repetition also helps in language development; at the same time, the repetitive rhythm of the text helps children develop an ear for the music of words.

The book teaches about colors (the dogs are all different colors), opposites (big/little, on/off) and prepositions (dogs going in or out, dogs on rooftops, under the house, over the water). The pictures closely reflect the text, and this helps children grasp the meaning of words easily.

If you're looking for funny stories for kids, this one's a sure winner. It has dogs getting up to all sorts of capers, with humorous illustrations adding to the charm of the story. The book revolves round two intertwined plots: one is about a party all the dogs are going to, that takes place at the end; the other is about an amusing romance involving a boy (dog), a girl (dog) and hats, that teaches a lesson in tact and the power of words.

The book comes in two versions: a full-text hardcover version, and an abridged board book edition. The longer version, with the dogs' antics described in full, is for most children. The board book is meant for babies with a limited attention span: it is a smaller size and is sturdy enough to withstand some rough handling. Be sure to get the right version for your child.
