Caps for Sale
by Esphyr Slobodkina

Caps for Sale is one of the most popular children's books of our time, with more than 1.2 million copies sold. It is a simple story that kids find hilarious. As the subtitle puts it, it's a tale of a peddler, some monkeys and their monkey business.

A peddler walks around selling caps from the tall, tottering stack on his head. One morning he stops for a break, and takes a nap under a tree. When he wakes up, all his 16 caps are gone - except for his own checkered cap, which is still on his head.

He looks up and sees 16 chattering monkeys high up the tree, each wearing a cap. His frantic attempts to get his caps back, and the way those mischievous monkeys copy his every move, make for comical reading. He shakes his fist at the monkeys, and they shake their fists back at him. He stamps his foot, and they stamp theirs. Finally, he's so mad he throws his cap on the ground, and... you guessed it, he gets all his caps back.

If you're looking for funny stories for kids, or bedtime stories that you can read and enact with your child, this one is a sure winner. Kids love to copy the fist-shaking and foot-stomping antics of the monkeys, and it's great fun for the family when parents get into the act too.
